Work Intensity and Labour Supply

AbstractWe develop a model where individuals accumulate fatigue from work intensity when choosing hours worked. Fatigue captures intertemporal costs of labour supply and leads to a utility loss. As fatigue increases, individuals optimally choose to work fewer hours. The model also predicts that if individuals cannot easily shift consumption over time, they will work fewer hours but accumulate more fatigue when work intensity increases. Calibration to 19 European countries provides evidence for the claim that a higher share of the service sector is linked to increasing work fatigue and that public provisions of healthcare improves recovery and mental health.JEL codesE71, I12, J22
Employee shirking and overworking: modelling the unintended consequences of work organisation

Underworking (i.e. shirking) and overworking of employees can have detrimental effects for the individual and the organisation. We develop a computational model to investigate how work structure, specifically the way in which managers distribute work tasks amongst employees, impacts work intensity and working time. The model draws on theories from economics, psychology and management, and on empirical observations. The simulations show that when managers correctly estimate task difficulty, but undervalue the employee’s competence, opportunities for shirking are provided due to longer deadlines. The mechanical efficiency of the leg extensor musculature of men and women was examined with a special "sledge ergometer". The subjects (ten males and ten females) performed pure positive work, pure negative work and a combination of negative and positive work (stretch-shortening cycle). The mechanical efficiency of pure positive work was on average 19.8 +/- 1.2% for female subjects and 17.4 +/- 1.2% for male subjects (t = 4.12, P less than 0.001), although the work intensity was equal in both groups. espanolObjetivo Describir el riesgo de pobreza y exclusion social en ninos/as de 8-11 anos de Gipuzkoa y Valencia (Espana), mediante los indicadores AROPE (At Risk Of Poverty or Social Exclusion), y evaluar sus factores asociados en el Proyecto INMA (Infancia y Medio Ambiente). Metodo Familias de Gipuzkoa y Valencia (394 y 382, respectivamente) completaron un cuestionario en 2015-2016.
